You're correct in saying the main use is getting people off of deaths door, but she's a capable character if needing to keep everyone at full strength as well. The only downside is she can't heal the character in Rank 4. The Abomination is a unique character in that it is unlocked with all of his abilties when you first acquire him and he cannot go on a quest with any religious. The Arbalest's Battlefield Bandage is actually not bad if going for a main healing roll with her. You can certainly play without Abominations, but they're a very cool class and I'd recomend trying it.
Their in-battle heals may not seem as good as the Vestal's at first glance, but the primary use of such a skill is to get heroes off of death's door, and they do that just fine (plague doctor also removes DoT which is invaluable in some areas). Both the Arbalest and the Plague Doctor are great camp healers and are more reliable as combatants than the Vestal (and they can be used with the abomination of course).
